The efforts of the Niagara bid committee, local community, and dedicated volunteers have paid off.

The Canada Summer Games would be held in the Niagara region in 2021.

Three other Ontario regions had submitted their bids to host the games –– Sudbury, Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge.

“Being part of the committee last time, which did an excellent job, I can say this committee has even surpassed them,” says Bob Waite, former head of track and field in 2001 bidding committee.

The Canada Games Council made the announcement last Thursday in Toronto while the Niagara’s bid committee arranged a live viewing event at FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in St. Catharines. About 120 people gathered for the announcement which was displayed on a screen in front of the hall.

“I’m feeling elated, this is amazing! This just adds to the momentum of the athletes in Niagara and athletes coming from all over to compete in Niagara,” says Patrick Gagliardi a boxing enthusiast who came to view the announcement.

The games are expected to have an economic impact of $240 million and attract 30,000 visitors along with various prominent people.
